12 JUL 2018: A 73-year-old man who went overboard a Victoria-bound cruise ship has been found unresponsive and pronounced dead in hospital. The US Coast Guard said a helicopter rescue crew made the tragic discovery Tuesday afternoon in waters off southwest Vancouver Island.

The Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship reported the man went overboard at about 4:30 am that morning in US waters just north of Washington State.

"Any time we are unable to accomplish our goal of saving lives, we are deeply saddened," said Coast Guard Capt. M.M. Balding in a statement.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim."

The cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
