HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY

15 MAR 2019:  Well, it’s almost St. Patrick’s Day, (you might have noticed) and as we can’t all get together to down a Guinness or two, or sip glass of Irish whiskey, let’s enjoy some music.  This is a couple of years old, but it’s the biggest ever street performance of Steve Earle's "Galway Girl" and took place on June 11th, 2016 in Galway, Ireland.

IN A THEME PARK FAR FAR AWAY

I AM WOMAN

08 MAR 2019: Singer songwriter Helen Reddy won a Grammy Award for her 1972 hit 'I Am Woman' which shot up the charts, made her a star and became an anthem for the women’s movement. Currently there is a film in production chronicling the story of the song and Reddys rise to stardom. British actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey stars as the Australian singer.

NOT READY TO MAKE NICE

08 MAR 2019: The Dixie Chicks are comprised of sisters, Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines. On March 10, 2003, during a London concert, nine days before the 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Natalie Maines told the audience, "We don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States (George W. Bush) is from Texas", which got a positive reaction from the British audience but unleashed a barrage of problems in the US.

ROAR

08 MAR 2019: Here Katy Perry’s anthem for women. This is from her ‘Prismatic World Tour’ and was the theme of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign where Perry performed it live at numerous campaign stops. Cathcj this video – especially her jump rope bit about half way through.

THINK SUNSHINE

01 MAR 2019: We ran this video a year ago, but given the weather – and even though Wiarton Willie didn’t see his shadow thereby predicting an early spring, (fingers crossed) this little ditty serves to remind us that we’re often in the business of linking people to the sun, which is where we’d probably like to be about now.

CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF A BRAND
Palm Springs says it with a song

01 MAR 2019:   To capture their “oasis” brand essence in a way that would reach all audiences, the Greater Palm Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau worked with the artistic team Echoer to create a sound whose music represents the voice, culture, experience, identity and positioning of the destination. This video gives us a behind the scenes look at how they went about it

Made in Cuba is a love story that left audiences enthralled as performers took them through a taste of Cuban culture. The production is one of over 200 artistic events taking place in and outside of Cuba to celebrate Havana’s 500-year anniversary.

GET GOING OR START SINGING
Route 66

22 FEB 2019: Around this time of year many of us get itchy feet and I don’t know about you, but I love driving trips (provided I am driving) and today’s music video is about a trip I really would like to take. I’ve done a small stretch but the whole route is a dream. The only drawback is - I know all the words and would sing all the way. Not a pretty sound.

THINK WARM THOUGHTS
Dream on

15 FEB 2019: Today’s musical video was suggested by our editor at large who suggests “it captures the zeitgeist here in Canada at the moment”. Given that it was a chilly 14C last evening in Los Angeles you might want to dream someplace slightly warmer – but hey – it’s all relative.

THE MUSIC OF OUR LIVES
Beatles and Boomers

15 FEB 2019: For Baby Boomers, the music of our lives was the Liverpool sound. Who among the Boomer generation can forget that Sunday night over 50 years ago (February 9, 1964) when 73 million people tuned in to see Ed Sullivan introduce four guys from Liverpool?

COLD STRESSED MANATEE RESCUED

15 FEB 2019: Rescue teams in Florida are starting to see the effects of low water temperatures on the state’s manatee population. Earlier this week, a 725 lb. sub-adult male manatee arrived at SeaWorld Orlando’s critical care animal hospital, suffering from symptoms of cold stress and dehydration.

PLAYING THE GAME
A virtual visit to Wellington NZ

Virtual Wellington allows people to explore and interact with the city without boarding a plane. It includes an interactive game, WellTown, available for free download in the Steam and Oculus VR stores, and 360-video tours around Wellington attractions, education institutions and workplaces.

WANNABE

01 FEB 2019: In November of 1996, I was in England with my friend Helen and throughout our days in London and our subsequent stay in the Cotswolds we repeatedly heard the catchy/earwormy/eventually somewhat irritating, refrain, “tell me what you want, what you really really want!” It was playing everywhere and people (including Helen and I) were singing along. The Spice Girls had arrived.

A TOUCH OF SCOTLAND

15 JAN 2018: The Mull of Kintyre is the southwestern tip of the Kintyre Peninsula in southwest Scotland and on a clear and calm day, the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland is visible from here. An historic lighthouse, the second commissioned in Scotland, guides shipping in the intervening North Channel. Paul Mccartney and Denny Laine wrote a song in tribute to the area where McCartney has owned a farm since 1966.

THE DIGGERS REVENGE

23 JAN 2019: A disgruntled builder allegedly (watch the video) smashed his digger through the glass doors of a new Travelodge in Liverpool after getting into a row with the hotel contractors over pay. Video footage taken on mobile phones and widely shared on social media show the digger mounting the steps in front of the hotel, smashing through the glass doors and tearing at the fabric of the building once inside. Construction workers on site can be heard yelling at the driver. Warning – naughty words can be clearly heard.

WATERLOO

18 JAN 2019: Several readers (and listeners) have told me that some of our Friday music videos stick with them all day(s) - an earworm - a catchy bit of music that continually repeats through their mind long after it is no longer playing.

SIMPLY THE BEST
Tina Turner

11 JAN 2019: Some years ago I attended a Tina turner concert in Toronto – I just checked the year and was astounded to find it was 2008 – how time flies! In any event I was lucky enough to not just enjoy the concert from a box, but also to be able to get right down to the front of the stage (thank you Lorol) where the incomparable Tina, in high-high-heels and short-short-skirt, strutted her stuff with the energy, enthusiasm and passion of a performer a third her age.

SCAREY STUFF
Real or fake footage

11 JAN 2019: It is claimed that the footage in this of an Emirates Airbus A380 departing from Mauritius was taken by a drone. If genuine, it represents a major breach of airline safety. The video was originally uploaded to a Facebook page but then immediately removed, fuelling speculation that it was genuine.

Those of you old enough may also recall it being a fave on the playlist at Ron Harding’s legendary parties.
