10 AUG 2018: One of the most severe manatee injury cases had a happy ending recently when Lagoona, a juvenile manatee, was returned to Florida waters after more than a year in intensive rehabilitative care. Lagoona’s recovery was nothing short of miraculous, and we’re sharing ABC Nightline’s segment on the story of her rescue, rehabilitation and return.

When SeaWorld’s Orlando Rescue Team and facilities from the Manatee Rescue & Rehabilitation Partnership (MRP) rescued Lagoona in May 2017, she was suffering life-threatening boat strikes to the head and neck and was brought to the SeaWorld Manatee Rehabilitation Area for evaluation and treatment.

The SeaWorld team worked closely with its partners to provide the intensive care she needed to recover, conducting CT scans and X-rays to assess the extent of her injuries, performing multiple surgeries and utilizing antibiotics and a honey therapy to treat her wounds.

Lagoona’s return was a much anticipated and celebrated event, and a feat that simply couldn’t have happened without the commitment and expertise of the dedicated SeaWorld staff and its collaboration with partners.
